XFCE 4.20, Wayland (labwc), GDM, Linux Lite 7.x

Test Continuation

Continuing with testing I managed to get wayvnc working. It may be that it is my system that is the cause of the problem given the desktop usage of gnome wayland settings I installed to get gnome-remote-desktop working, coupled with the fact that gnome-remote-desktop is a systemd service that starts in the boot process. It could also be that gnome-remote-desktop cannot be connected to the waypipe ports that may be needed for wayvnc if I allow the gnome service to run. In any case gnome-remote-desktop is a gnome systemd service, so it seemed logical to me to just mask it and stop it. In my case that did the trick and I was then able to connect to my Wayland desktop over VNC with Remmina. Anyway the whole rigmarole of it could be easily scripted and aliased so it’s not really an inconvenience at all.

After masking and stopping the gnome-remote-desktop service I was able to VNC connect to my Linux Lite 7 XFCE4.20 system running on Wayland labwc with a Remmina client on my Linux Lite 6.6 system. The connection was almost instantaneous and the remote Wayland desktop very fast. My suspicion that VNC would work better for Linux to Linux connections than RDP was proved correct and there was no need to login from GDM.

I’m now satisfied with RDP, VNC, SFTP, and SSH connections in both directions. Given the way wayvnc runs I will be able to start and stop the server from an SSH terminal just like I do with x11vnc.
